3 Types of Change

Chemical vs. Physical Change

Physical Changes occur when the appearance of matter changes but the chemical composition of the matter remains the same. (When water freezes, it is still made of water.)

Chemical Changes occur when the change results in a different type of matter than was originally present. (A cooked egg does not have the same properties and composition of raw egg.)

For the changes described in each line, determine whether the change is a Physical or Chemical change.

  1. Butter melts
  2. Steak cooks
  3. Water freezes
  4. Sugar dissolves
  5. Hydrogen explodes
  6. Oxygen burns
  7. Iron magnetizes
  8. Aluminum blackens
