6 Multiplying and Dividing with Significant Figures

Significant Figures – Multiplying and Dividing

When using significant figures in calculations, for multiplying and dividing (or using power) functions, the measurement with the least significant figures will determine the number of significant figures in the answer.

Multiplication of sig fig example 2.51 x 0.2000 = 0.502 with 3 sig figs

Division sig fig 3.89 divided by 2.5153 = 1.54616638 but with significant figures needs to be reduced to the 3 per the first part and answer is 1.55.

Perform the calculation and determine the number of significant figures.

Answer with Significant Figures

Number of Significant Figures

15.05(2.901) =
4.880/3.2 =
33.06/32.940
3.90 (0.0091) =
4.20 x 0.7 =
1.91/0.85 =
18.425(5.5) =
6.058/9.81 =
