5 Adding and Subtracting Significant Figures

Significant Figures

When using significant figures in calculations, for simple adding and subtracting functions, the measurement with the least significant figures will determine the ending place for the significant figures.

Example of sig fig addition. 2.519 + 3.04 = 5.059 which rounds to 5.06 Example of sig fig subtraction. 23.06 - 3.051 = 20.009, which rounds to 20.01

Perform the calculation and determine the number of significant figures.

Answer with Significant Figures

Number of Significant Figures

13.05 + 2.901 =
4.800 + 3.2 =
31.06 + 32.940
3.90 + 0.00891 =
9.20 + 0.8 =
2.91 – 0.85 =
16.435 – 5.9 =
6.068 – 9.81 =
