19 Dalton’s Law

Dalton’s Law

The law of partial pressures based on the idea of multiple gases existing together within a container.

The volume and temperature of the container applies to all of the gases within the container but the number of moles has a direct influence on the pressure of each gas.

P= P1 + P2 + P3

Practice problems of Dalton’s Law.

  1. An air tank contains O2 and N2 at 0.5atm and 1.5atm respectively. What is the total pressure?
  2. A diver’s tank contains 0.5mol O2, 0.5mol N2 and 0.1mol He. If the tank is at 298K and has a volume of 2L. What is the pressure of each gas? What is the total pressure?
