18 Naming Type I Ionic Compounds

Type I Ionic Compounds

Type I Ionic compounds refer to ionic compounds (metal + nonmetal) that is comprised of the representative elements (aka “tall columns” or columns whose numbers end with A). Their name and formula are directly related, so that the use of prefixes or any additional indicators is not necessary.

Example:

CaO 

  1. Name the cation – Calcium
  2. Name the anion – oxide (oxygen becomes oxide)Do not include any prefixes or modifiers

Name: Calcium oxide
