16 Naming Type II Ionic Compounds

Type II Ionic Compounds

Type II Ionic compounds refer to ionic compounds (metal + nonmetal) that is comprised of the representative element (aka “tall columns” or columns whose numbers end with A) anions bonded to a transition metal (aka “sunken columns” or columns whose numbers end with B). The name of the anion is consistent with its charge, but as transition metals have variable charges (even multiple charges per the element)as a group, the charge has to be identified within the chemical name. Charges for transition metals are identified using the Roman Numerals.

Example:

CuO

  1. Name the cation – Copper
  2. Name the anion – oxide (oxygen becomes oxide)
  3. Include in between the two ions the charge of the transition metal as a Roman Numeral – II

Name: Copper II Oxide

Practice naming the compound.

  1. FeN
  2. Cu3P2
  3. AgBr
  4. PbCl2
  5. MnO2
  6. AuO2
  7. Pb3N2
  8. CuS
  9. CoCl2
