Communities in Crisis–Student Voices on Climate Change addresses the specific threats of climate change on communities ranging from villages to large megalopolis. The threats encompass heatwaves and droughts, ocean acidification and harmful algal blooms. The project is written and edited by students at Penn State. The goal is to compile the magnitude of the climate change crisis on communities across the globe, as well as the breadth of the issues we face. Beyond looking at the current threats and forecasts, the students consider the solutions for the problems. Communities in Crisis is an ongoing project with new entries added each semester, and, over time it will chronicle the changing threats that climate change poses to populations around the world.

This text is an atoms-first adaptation of OpenStax Chemistry 2e. The intention of “atoms-first” involves a few basic principles: first, it introduces atomic and molecular structure much earlier than the traditional approach, and it threads these themes through subsequent chapters. This approach may be chosen as a way to delay the introduction of material such as stoichiometry that students traditionally find abstract and difficult, thereby allowing students time to acclimate their study skills to chemistry. Additionally, it gives students a basis for understanding the application of quantitative principles to the chemistry that underlies the entire course. It also aims to center the study of chemistry on the atomic foundation that many will expand upon in a later course covering organic chemistry, easing that transition when the time arrives.

This book provides an overview of the criminal justice system and its primary components in the United States. Students will gain familiarity with the workings of, and relationship between, the police, courts, and both institutional and community corrections; it also spends significant time discussing the history of crime (and criminology) at the local, state, and national levels. While this book aims to give students a solid understanding of basic legal concepts and vocabulary, it will also take a socio-historical perspective that relates the evolution of US criminal justice to the contemporary structure of American society. Finally, this book is designed to support a primary research project that explores the relationship between individuals’ experiences of criminal victimization, attitudes toward firearms, and confidence in the police.
