3.2 ACES

Adverse Childhood Experience

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur in childhood. The traumatic events can include violence, abuse, and growing up in a family with mental health or substance use problems. In addition toxic stress resulting from an early traumatic experience changes one’s brain development and affect how the body responds to stress. Based on research we know that Adverse Childhood Experiences are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood.  We know that these early traumatic experiences can be prevented.
