Chapter 5 Objectives

This chapter provides the background and context to understand the processes that go into collecting cores, seafloor and borehole measurements. Instrumentation used on JOIDES Resolution for drilling activities are also described. Readers will view images of cores collected from the deep sea and what can be learn from them.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 5: Drilling at Sea

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • Identify the key stages of coring on the JOIDES Resolution, from tripping pipe to retrieving cores
  • Identify and describe the characteristics of different core types and understand how core recovery and processing affect the analysis of samples
  • Describe how sites drilled in the deep sea can be revisited in the future for the collection of additional material and data
  • Contrast the contributions of borehole measurements with those of core samples
