1 Chapter 1 Objectives

As we begin our journey into learning about scientific ocean drilling, we start with a broad exploration of Planet Earth inside and out. Note that this chapter is not a detailed introduction to plate tectonics and Earth system science but was written to supplement and reinforce existing classroom instruction on these topics.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 1: Earth Structure and Systems

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and process of the scientific method
  • Describe the scientific method as it relates to a scientific ocean drilling expedition
  • Apply temporal and spatial scales to Earth processes, including Earth’s formation
