24 Chapter 4 Objectives

From navigation to communication, there are several functions a drill ship performs to achieve the science objectives and to ensure the safety of those on board. Note that all the items discussed in this chapter relate to the vessel JOIDES Resolution.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 4: Ship Operations

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • Describe the various tools used for communication by scientists and crew
  • Explain the process for how the ship remains positioned over a hole during the drilling process
  • List the various ways people stay safe during expeditions
  • Describe the process for providing food and water for personnel and essential expedition operations
