37 Chapter 5 Objectives

This chapter provides the background and context to understand the processes that go into collecting cores, seafloor and borehole measurements. Instrumentation used on JOIDES Resolution for drilling activities are also described. Readers will view images of cores collected from the deep sea and what can be learn from them.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 5: Drilling at Sea

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • Explain the processes used for obtaining sub-seafloor samples on board JOIDES Resolution
  • Discuss and compare what we can learn from taking core samples and taking borehole measurements
