Below are materials to support teaching and learning about scientific ocean drilling that connect to the content in this chapter. We also encourage you to explore the Resources for Educators page in this OER for links to additional exercises and assessments.

Time to apply: Part A

Exercise 1

Read 9.1 Paths to an Expedition on JOIDES Resolution and respond to the following questions:

a) Why is it important for the environmental review board to evaluate proposed drilling sites before a scientific expedition begins?

b) What was the reason a drilling site for Expedition 402 was rejected as both a primary and alternative location?

Exercise 2

Review  9.2  Onboard and Onshore Outreach Officers and respond to the following questions:

a) Why do you think it is important for scientific ocean drilling programs to include outreach officers as part of their expeditions?

b) Imagine you were chosen as an outreach officer on JOIDES Resolution. What would be one way you would share the story of the expedition with people back home? (For example, through art, writing, video, or another medium.)

Exercise 3

Reflect on 9.4  Navigating COVID-19, and respond to the following question:

a) What do you think were the unique challenges and potential advantages of managing a viral outbreak like COVID-19 during a science expedition at sea?

Exercise 4

Read through 9.5 Patches, Logos, and a Sea Turtle Rescue and respond to the following questions:

a) How do expedition patches and logos help tell the story of a scientific expedition, and why do you think they are important to the people on board?

b) The crew rescued a sea turtle entangled in fishing nets during Expedition 395E. What does this event tell you about the role of scientists and crew in protecting the environment while conducting research at sea?

Time to apply: Part B

The JOIDES Resolution website has an entire collection of Classroom Activities that include lesson plans, data exercises, digital interactives, posters, and career information.
