8 Chapter 2 Objectives

We start this chapter by going back to the very beginnings of scientific ocean drilling and meeting those that started the journey to drill into the deep sea.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 2: Visionaries and Their Visions

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • State the context for the origins of the term “oceanography”
  • Understand the significance of the Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho)
  • Identify the individual people and organizations involved in Project Mohole, and the motivation behind this project
  • Identify the challenges and solutions in early ocean drilling technology
