This Open Educational Resource (OER) has provided an overview of scientific ocean drilling, from a summary of its beginnings, to a description of the drilling technology, and an introduction to the people and positions on the drilling vessels. However, there are many more examples of work and life at sea that we did not include in the prior chapters. This was intentional, so we would not have the text deviate too far from the Learning Objectives defined for each section. Therefore, in this section of the OER, we provide short stories that highlight activities, events and items that are also part of the narrative of scientific ocean drilling. We hope you find these entries insightful and helpful in getting a broader picture of the scientific ocean drilling community.

Learning Objectives for Chapter 9: Essential Stories of Scientific Ocean Drilling

After reviewing the content in this chapter and completing the exercises, students will be able to:

  • Understand the different roles and teamwork involved in conducting ocean research expeditions.
  • Recognize how traditions and symbols, like patches and logos, help document and communicate scientific work.
  • Consider the importance of environmental awareness and ethical decision-making during research activities at sea.
