18 Schedule Management

Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  • Understand the approach and information needed to update a construction schedule
  • Identify the schedule impact of job progress on an as-planned schedule following a schedule update
  • Describe the concepts related to schedule optimization, schedule reduction, and resource loading of a CPM schedule

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines Control Schedule as a process to determine the status of the project scheduling, determining whether changes have occurred or should occur, and influencing and managing schedule changes.  To effectively control a project schedule, it is important to have an inial detailed project schedule and to capture the data needed from the field to update the schedule.  This can also be referred to as Progress Monitoring.

Overall project-level schedule updates for a typical building construction project will typically occur on a monthly basic.  This is the typical frequency identified in the contract between the Owner and Constructor.  But it is important to note that more frequent updates may be very beneficial, and some scheduling approaches, such as the Last Planner System, have multiple levels of schedule control.
