9 Creating, Finding, & Assessing Instructional Video to Engage Students

Description

Instructional video allows for visually explaining information, assists in bringing contextually relevant examples to class, and, if instructor-created, can allow for an increase in instructor presence in a variety of course modalities. Instructional videos can be a great choice if you are also looking for variety of learning methods in order to maintain engagement of students in the asynchronous portion of a course or as an anchor for discussion as part of a synchronous portion of a course.

Attendees of this workshop will first explore when it is appropriate to incorporate instructional video as a right modality for learning. The session will also include what video tools are available at Penn State and how to create targeted instructional video that can be used to engage your students. We will then pivot and focus on how to find high-quality instructional video and give appropriate credit to the creator. The session will conclude by encouraging participants to consider “What topic areas within my course could I make easier to understand with instructional video? How should I best assess videos that I’m planning to include?”
