Chapter 1: Information Sciences

Information science represents a large part of what the College of Information Sciences and Technology is all about. This chapter will focus first on defining and explaining information science as a field. The chapter then shifts to the Internet, as it provides a critical lens in which we can study and explore information science.

My hope is throughout this chapter, and throughout the entire course, I can change the way you perceive information and technology, from the everyday use of mobile and communication technologies, to how you search for data, to data security and privacy, and much more!

Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, you be able to:

  • Define information sciences.
  • Describe the role of an information scientist in today’s society.
  • Define the Internet.
  • Identify key points in the history of the Internet.
